I painted 'Out of the Blue' with two ideas in mind. One, our blue planet, painted on the plywood square inset, and the blackness of outer space, which astrophysicists are exploring further beyond the known to the unknown. The second idea was inspired by a song by Neil Young called 'Out of the Blue, Into the Black', the feeling of going from 'the blues' to the 'black dog' of deep depression. (my interpretation). My painting says that the Blue - our planet - is pretty good in spite of many problems, and when you think about what's beyond the solar system it's a kind of lonely feeling.
